On the border of Chania and the prefecture of Rethymno, about 40 kilometers east of the city of Chania you will find the coastal town Georgioupolis. It is one of the top tourist destinations for holidays in Crete. Geographically, Georgioupolis belongs to the municipality of Apokoronos, an area full of picturesque villages, lush nature, lakes and rivers. The most famous lake of Crete is here, Lake Kournas. The square of Georgioupolis is lively and vigorous throughout the day. From the morning where coffee and breakfast is served at cafes, at noon for lunch at one of the taverns and in the evening you can enjoy a drink at one of the bars that are popular with the young people in the area. A 5 minute walk from the square you will come across the bay of Georgioupolis which ends up at Almiros River. To the right and left of the harbour are the beaches and along the beaches are many restaurants and cafes where you can treat yourself to something or enjoy your coffee overlooking the magnificent beach. At the edge of the harbour we find the picturesque church of St. Nicholas, built on a pier that offers an ideal landscape suitable for photos. Kavros and the surrounding areas are recommended for groups of friends, families and couples as they have a greatly developed tourist industry and meet the needs of the visitor who seeks a relaxing holiday but also those who want to enjoy the nightlife in the surrounding bar lounges. The areas of Kavros and Georgioupolis are ideal for excursions to the neighboring villages of Vamos. Each one is particularly interesting either historically or architecturally.
